STEM Defined at RHS and RMS

The Walker County School District recognizes a unique opportunity to pursue the FY10 Title IID: Enhancing Education Through Technology (Ed Tech) Competitive Grant to increase community awareness in the importance of STEM education.  The Grant team encompasses all facets of education from elementary through post-secondary that gives students a vision early to be refined and developed through their critical development stages.   The goal is to sustain a viable STEM education program to prepare students for work and life in the 21st century.  Research has shown that students most likely to major in STEM fields in college (and persist to earn their degrees) are those who develop interest in STEM careers through early career planning and take challenging classes that prepare them for college-level science and math coursework.

The focus and goals of the project are directed toward improving achievement in the area of science and math through collaborative projects using innovative technology in the Technology courses, exciting professional development, enriched instructional strategies, enhanced communication among students, parents, and school personnel, and instant availability of digital resources. The desired results will be for all students enrolled in science and math courses to experience increased student achievement while enhancing their technology literacy levels, with the end result being improvement in math and science content-area achievement and higher examination scores and increase student 21st century skills and technology literacy by providing students with opportunities to use the technical tools of the STEM industry.
